Enabling, Disabling, & Customizing the Safety Features on Your BMW

The safety features BMW has  implemented into the latest BMW models are great, but let’s face it, they can get distracting. Learn more about each of the safety features below and how you can enable, disable, or customize these safety features to meet your individual preferences.

Forward Collision Mitigation

Forward Collision Mitigation assists in preventing accidents with other vehicles or unexpected objects. The Forward Collision Mitigation technology is constantly monitoring your environment (your speed, the speeds of the cars around you, the speed limit, etc.), and will automatically apply your brakes should you not be paying attention.

The Forward Collision Mitigation setting will also apply your breaks when other obstructions appear on the road. This may include other vehicles pulling out in front of you; people, deer, or other large animals crossing the road; or any other possible obstruction on the road.

Lane Departure Warning

The Lane Departure Warning safety feature with Steering Intervention assists in keeping you in your lane. When your vehicle approaches either line, the Lane Departure Warning feature will alert you through vibrations through the steering wheel and through a soft signal sound. If no correction is made, and Steering Intervention is activated in your Safety Settings, the BMW will reposition itself back to the center of the lane.

Blind Spot Detection

Blind Spot Detection indicators are the orange triangles that appear on your exterior mirrors. When another vehicle is in your blind spot, the triangles will illuminate to make you aware of the other vehicle's positioning. If you turn on your turn signal while a vehicle is in your blind spot, and Steering Intervention is selected, the active steering will not allow you to change into that lane.

Enabling, Disabling, or customizing the safety features on your BMW

All of these safety features include three sensitivity settings: Early, Medium, and Late (or Reduced). The ability to change these settings allows you to customize each individual setting to your personal preference. For instance, you're able to configure the Blind Spot Detection to appear sooner while keeping the Lane Departure Warning to a minimum before engaging.

You also have the ability to disable all these safety features on your BMW. To do so, simply hold down the Driver Safety Button, which appears on the center counsel as a vehicle with a green (or orange) light circling around it, until the light turns off.

BMW promises to provide you with the Ultimate Driving Machine, and that includes giving you access to key features that can assist in keeping you, your family, and other drivers safe while operating your BMW. While these features are useful, it is understandable to want to configure them to your own individual needs and preferences. By learning more about each feature, we hope that you will be able to identify those needs and preferences.
